THE THING ABOUT RIVALS

2010 was the year of several turning points for three young writers from Southern California. Serving as local residents in the county of Los Angeles, they absorbed every minute that belonged to spare time and reserved them for what they knew then as a calling, to what is now known by some as The Thing About Rivals. The trio, which have known each other for the better part of 15 years have always bonded through the culture of music composition regardless of genre, trend, or time. Simply, it has always contained a common factor, being that they all played a role; each one of them; each and every time.

Their more youthful years taught them of possible distractions that make themselves enticing to very young aspiring artists, rather than allowing those elements to conquer their confidences, they followed their intuition of writing for a living. By living, they mean just that. Back to 2010…Emir Abdo, Matthew Garcia, and Andres Abdo spent a profound amount of time assembling original scores that served as an honest depiction of each individuals’ lives and character. By early 2011, they published The Thing About Rivals’ debut EP titled Sabrina (inspired by their annually-visited California landmark in Bishop, CA known as Lake Sabrina).

The extended-play consisting of 6 surviving tracks hand picked out of 18 was self recorded/produced with the help of mutual friend Israel Mejia. Mejia, the youngest of the group, is a classically trained musician who’s suggestions and contributions to the very d.i.y.-style recording left the lads no choice but to suggest Mejia’s residency into The Thing About Rivals. “After hearing his role on the organ/piano in the rehearsal studio, I just couldn’t accept doing without him live…” –Emir Abdo.

After completing Sabrina, The Thing About Rivals moved to the city of Pasadena, CA, after they found themselves performing live at many local venues and gaining a significant amount of inspiration. Sabrina will be made available world-wide on July 27th, 2011 subsequent to their signing with Gas Can Music. They are currently working on their first Long Play, while playing shows both locally and regionally.
